Biography

The overarching focus of Dr. Wideman’s research is the impact of exercise, disease and injury on the endocrine system. Under this umbrella, she has focused on; 1) exercise-induced alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis—specifically growth hormone (GH) and IGF-1, 2) cardiometabolic (hormones & cytokines) risk factor development in different populations, including the utility of using heart rate variability (HRV) as a non-invasive indicator of endocrine influences and 3) sex-specific hormonal influences in injury and disease. Dr. Wideman is currently the IRB Chair and helped develop and regularly teaches the responsible conduct of research training at UNCG.
